Long thought to decrease the risk of heart disease and cancer, eating walnuts has now been shown to be good for gut health. Researchers at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans have determined that walnut consumption increases beneficial gut bacteria as well as the diversity of bacteria in the gut microbiome.
More evidence is emerging all the time that gut health has a direct impact on overall health. Microbial imbalance and maladaptation in the intestines has been linked to several chronic diseases so this is good news for those looking to positively affect change from the inside.
Researchers divided mice into two categories and adjusted the diet of one set to include walnuts. After 10 weeks, the mice that ate walnuts had a greater assortment of bacteria in the intestines as well as an increase in probiotic-type bacteria. The walnut-eating mice also had a decreased amount of “bad” bacteria compared to the control group.
Walnuts are a popular choice among the health conscious because they are high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Now there is another reason to go nuts for walnuts.
